Daily and Shabbat Services

Our goal is to provide in-person worship services while protecting our congregants and staff. Individuals identified as high risk or higher risk are advised to remain home to limit their risk of exposure. We encourage these individuals to participate through our numerous virtual service options.

As vaccination rates continue to increase – City of Houston guidelines and our medical advisers have given us the ability to expand the number of in-person participants to 135 for services. Our Oneg Shabbat is back, join us after services in the Sukkah courtyard. Registration is only required for our Friday night Shabbat Renewal service - space is limited and reserved for members.

In addition, our daily J.B. Greenfield Chapel service is also open to members with no registration required.

We will elect our synagogue board of directors, discuss the accomplishments of the previous year and share what is in store for the coming year. Please make plans to attend this is important business meeting.

In honor of Jerrad Bloome, our synagogue president whose dedicated service throughout the pandemic has ensured the strength of our Congregation through the most challenging crisis facing institutions across the globe, we are pleased to announce that our annual meeting on April 25 will honor Jerrad, his wife Sara and his two daughters Rebecca and Amanda.

During our meeting we will thank Jerrad our outgoing president for tremendous leadership during his term, his mentorship of incoming president David Stein and present the Bloome family with a tribute book comprised of personal messages from our congregation.

All tribute messages must be received by noon on Friday, April 9 to be included in the Bloome Family Tribute Book.

Main sanctuary service are in the Barg Sactuary and occur Friday evenings and Saturday mornings.
The J.B. Greenfield Chapel minyan occurs daily in the Freedman Levit Sanctuary.

They currently consists of up to 60 members who have registered in advance. Please visit our website for times, registration, and streaming.

Registration for in-person services is available to members only, and requires logging in to reserve your space. Only those pre-registered individuals will be allowed on campus.

Our goal is to provide in-person worship services, when deemed safe and appropriate, while protecting our congregants and staff. Individuals identified as high risk or higher risk are advised to remain home to limit their risk of exposure. We encourage these individuals to participate through our numerous virtual service options.

Main sanctuary service are in the Barg Sactuary and occur Friday evenings and Saturday mornings.
The J.B. Greenfield Chapel minyan occurs daily in the Freedman Levit Sanctuary.

On the weekends that we have a B'nai Mitzvah in the Barg Sanctuary, we are offering a Member Led service in the Freedman Levit Sanctuary to allow our members to continue attending services in the building. We are currently allowing up to 30 members who have registered in advance to attend that service.

Special Constitution Meeting
Sunday, January 24, 2020 at 4:00pm virtually via ZOOM

President Jerrad Bloome, has called for a Special Congregation Meeting with the sole purpose of voting on a new Constitution. Only the Congregation can vote on constitutional changes at a regular Annual or Special meeting. The reason for a Special Congregation Meeting is that we would like to have the new Constitution in place prior to the next regular Annual Meeting. All eligible members in good standing are able to vote.

The Constitution is the basic governing document of the Congregation. It sets out the parameters, responsibilities, and limitations of leadership. There are many changes being proposed, too many to enumerate here, some more substantial than others. For example, some changes have to do with revising the term of Officers and Trustees and the date of the Annual Meeting to coincide with the fiscal year, some with the size and makeup of the Board of Trustees, and some limiting the voting rights of past Presidents to those who attend meetings and participate in discussions. And there are many more.

In order to register for this special meeting you need to be logged into your account.
The link to attend will be sent day of to all those members in good standing who are eligible to vote.
The deadline to register is 12pm on Sunday, January 24th and you should register with the email address associated with your ZOOM account.

Papa Phil Can (His Kidney's Can't)
Phil was diagnosed with kidney failure in early 2020, and the family has been conducting an urgent nationwide search to help find a living kidney donor.

Phil has lived in the Detroit area his whole life, and he and the family have been a part of the Detroit Jewish community for generations. He, along with his wife Debbi have been longtime members of Temple Israel and Temple Shir Shalom, and involved in countless Jewish organizations from the Brotherhood, Friendship Circle, and more.

Since his diagnosis in February 2020, Phil and his family launched www.PapaPhilCan.com and over 150 hero volunteers from across the country have raised their hands to learn more about donation and testing. Unfortunately, despite these amazing results, we have not yet found our hero donor, and Phil's condition is deteriorating quickly.

Special $300 tax deduction helps most people give to charity this year –
even if they don’t itemize

We are so grateful for the support of our congregants during this challenging year. As we approach the end of the 2020, we hope you will consider making a 100% tax deductible gift in support of Congregation Beth Yeshurun.

There is a special new provision for 2020 that will allow more people to easily claim an "above-the-line" deduction of up to $300 for cash donations made to Beth Yeshurun during 2020. This means the deduction lowers both adjusted gross income and taxable income – translating into tax savings for those making donations. Charitable donations of up to $300 made before December 31, 2020, are now deductible when people file their taxes in 2021, regardless of whether you itemize your tax return.

Further, gifts of long-term appreciated securities that have realized significant appreciation can be donated directly to support the synagogue while ensuring your eligibility for a charitable tax deduction for the market value of donated stock. Neither you nor the Congregation must pay capital gains taxes when the stock is sold, but we encourage you to consult with your financial planner for details.

Supporting Beth Yeshurun by giving stock directly to the synagogue rather than donating the proceeds of sold stock can result in a larger deduction and greater tax savings for the donor and a larger gift to Beth Yeshurun. Moreover, your name will be listed as a member who cares.

Special Constitution Meeting
Sunday, January 24, 2020 at 4:00pm virtually via ZOOM

President Jerrad Bloome, has called for a Special Congregation Meeting with the sole purpose of voting on a new Constitution. Only the Congregation can vote on constitutional changes at a regular Annual or Special meeting. The reason for a Special Congregation Meeting is that we would like to have the new Constitution in place prior to the next regular Annual Meeting. All eligible members in good standing are able to vote.

The Constitution is the basic governing document of the Congregation. It sets out the parameters, responsibilities, and limitations of leadership. There are many changes being proposed, too many to enumerate here, some more substantial than others. For example, some changes have to do with revising the term of Officers and Trustees and the date of the Annual Meeting to coincide with the fiscal year, some with the size and makeup of the Board of Trustees, and some limiting the voting rights of past Presidents to those who attend meetings and participate in discussions. And there are many more.

The deadline to register is 12pm on Sunday, January 24th and you should register with the email address associated with your ZOOM account.

Because we are limiting the number of congregants in attendance, we are making our B'nai Mitzvah services private family events. On the weekends that we have a B'nai Mitzvah in the Barg Sanctuary, we are offering a Member Led service in the Freedman Levit Sanctuary to allow our members to continue attending services in the building. We are currently allowing up to 30 members who have registered in advance to attend that service.

The J.B. Greenfield Chapel minyan occurs daily in the Freedman Levit Sanctuary, visit our website for times, registration, and streaming. It currently consists of up to 30 members who have registered in advance.

Our goal is to provide in-person worship services, when deemed safe and appropriate, while protecting our congregants and staff. Individuals identified as high risk or higher risk are advised to remain home to limit their risk of exposure. We encourage these individuals to participate through our numerous virtual service options.

Registration for in-person services is available to members only, and requires logging in to reserve your space. Only those pre-registered individuals will be allowed on campus.

Daily and Shabbat Services

Because we are limiting the number of congregants in attendance, we are making our B'nai Mitzvah services private family events. On the weekends that we have a B'nai Mitzvah in the Barg Sanctuary, we are offering a Member Led service in the Freedman Levit Sanctuary to allow our members to continue attending services in the building. We are currently allowing up to 30 members who have registered in advance to attend that service.

The J.B. Greenfield Chapel minyan occurs daily in the Freedman Levit Sanctuary, visit our website for times, registration, and streaming. It currently consists of up to 30 members who have registered in advance.

Our goal is to provide in-person worship services, when deemed safe and appropriate, while protecting our congregants and staff. Individuals identified as high risk or higher risk are advised to remain home to limit their risk of exposure. We encourage these individuals to participate through our numerous virtual service options.

Registration for in-person services is available to members only, and requires logging in to reserve your space. Only those pre-registered individuals will be allowed on campus.

Because we are limiting the number of congregants in attendance, we are making our B'nai Mitzvah services private family events. On the weekends that we have a B'nai Mitzvah in the Barg Sanctuary, we are offering a Member Led service in the Freedman Levit Sanctuary to allow our members to continue attending services in the building. We are currently allowing up to 40 members who have registered in advance to attend that service.

The J.B. Greenfield Chapel minyan occurs daily in the Freedman Levit Sanctuary, visit our website for times, registration, and streaming. It currently consists of up to 40 members who have registered in advance.

Our goal is to provide in-person worship services, when deemed safe and appropriate, while protecting our congregants and staff. Individuals identified as high risk or higher risk are advised to remain home to limit their risk of exposure. We encourage these individuals to participate through our numerous virtual service options.

Registration for in-person services is available to members only, and requires logging in to reserve your space. Only those pre-registered individuals will be allowed on campus.

Chapel Services Officially Resume this Week

The J.B. Greenfield Chapel minyan occurs daily in the Freedman Levit Sanctuary, visit our website for times, registration, and streaming. This is no longer an egalitarian service, with the exception of Shabbat and Festival Member-led Services. It currently consists of 40 members who have registered in advance.

Only those pre-registered individuals will be allowed on campus.
Our goal is to provide in-person worship services, when deemed safe and appropriate, while protecting our congregants and staff. The following individuals are identified as high risk or higher risk and therefore are advised to remain home to limit their risk of exposure. We encourage these individuals to participate through our numerous virtual service options.

Risk categories include those age 65 or older and/or underlying conditions including:
Diabetes, severe heart conditions, chronic lung conditions or moderate to severe asthma, chronic kidney disease, liver disease, immunocompromised, severe obesity, and/or are residents of a nursing home or long-term care facility.

Additionally, those with any of the following symptoms must not attend services:
Cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fever > 100 degrees without use of aspirin or anti-inflammatory products within 4 hours of temperature testing, chills, sore throat, significant muscle ache or pain, new loss of taste or smell, nausea, vomiting and/or diarrhea.

While we may not be able to be together physically, we can still gather virtually as a community for prayer, programming and Jewish learning. Please join us for a week of virtual programming, accessible on our website, Facebook page, and YouTube channel.

Daily and Shabbat Services

IMPORTANT UPDATE:
Because we are limiting the number of congregants in attendance, we are making our B'nai Mitzvah services private family events. On the weekends that we have a B'nai Mitzvah in the Barg Sanctuary, we are offering a Member Led service in the Freedman Levit Sanctuary to allow our members to continue attending services in the building. We are currently allowing 20 members who have registered in advance to attend that service.

A Chapel-Style evening minyan occurs Saturday-Thursday in the Barg Sanctuary. Open to both men and women, it currently consists of 20 members who have registered in advance. Check the calendar for the service times.

Our goal is to provide in-person worship services, when deemed safe and appropriate, while protecting our congregants and staff. Individuals identified as high risk or higher risk are advised to remain home to limit their risk of exposure. We encourage these individuals to participate through our numerous virtual service options.

Registration for in-person services is available to members only, and requires logging in to reserve your space. Only those pre-registered individuals will be allowed on campus.

While we may not be able to be together physically, we can still gather virtually as a community for prayer, programming and Jewish learning. Please join us for a week of virtual programming, accessible on our website, Facebook page, and YouTube channel.

Daily and Shabbat Services

IMPORTANT UPDATE:
Because we are limiting the number of congregants in attendance, we are making our B'nai Mitzvah services private family events. On the weekends that we have a B'nai Mitzvah in the Barg Sanctuary, we are offering a Member Led service in the Freedman Levit Sanctuary to allow our members to continue attending services in the building. We are currently allowing 20 members who have registered in advance to attend that service.

A Chapel-Style evening minyan occurs Saturday-Thursday in the Barg Sanctuary. Open to both men and women, it currently consists of 20 members who have registered in advance. Check the calendar for the service times.

Our goal is to provide in-person worship services, when deemed safe and appropriate, while protecting our congregants and staff. Individuals identified as high risk or higher risk are advised to remain home to limit their risk of exposure. We encourage these individuals to participate through our numerous virtual service options.

Registration for in-person services is available to members only, and requires logging in to reserve your space. Only those pre-registered individuals will be allowed on campus.

On the weekends that we have a B'nai Mitzvah in the Barg Sanctuary, we are offering a Member Led service in the Freedman Levit Sanctuary to allow our members to continue attending services in the building. We are currently allowing 20 members who have registered in advance to attend that service.

The Beth Yeshurun Chesed Project was formed at the onset of the Covid 19 quarantine as a “reach-in” to our older or more isolated members. It acts as a voice from the synagogue assuring that we care, they are not alone, and we are here to fulfill their spiritual needs and direct them to Jewish community social services that are available if necessary.

These few minutes of social interaction are so appreciated by the BY members most vulnerable in these challenging times. Our volunteers are also enjoying the connections being made and have gotten to know these wonderful members. We’re also learning how to better serve this valued segment of our BY family which will carry-over beyond the pandemic.

To experience meaningful High Holy Days, our Chesed Project volunteers will specifically be checking-in to ensure those members most vulnerable know when and how to watch our virtual services and have what they need. This committee is Chaired by Jonathan Baliff, Vice Chaired by Lu Dorfman, with Rabbinical oversight by Rabbi Fort. The program is administratively managed by Mindi Stern, Director of Member Relations. If you would like to join the Chesed Project, please email Mindi at mstern@bethyeshurun.org

Post Oak Cemetery Update

Construction of the Sophia and Jack Bender Memorial Chapel at the Beth Yeshurun Post Oak Cemetery is complete and available for use. The chapel is enclosed and air conditioned with seating for 210 people. Restrooms are accessible from inside the building when the Chapel is in use. When the Chapel is not in use it will be locked, but restrooms will be accessible from outside by using the door combination 4521.

Funeral services in the Chapel can be livestreamed and recorded.

At the present time, funerals in the Chapel will be limited to 20 people as they are at the synagogue. Everyone will be required to wear masks and sit at least 6 feet apart unless they are living in the same household.

Entrance to the cemetery is now on Awty School Lane. The gate at N. Post Oak will only be used as an exit following funeral services.

Week of August 2, 2020

While we may not be able to be together physically, we can still gather virtually as a community for prayer, programming and Jewish learning. Please join us for a week of virtual programming, accessible on our website, Facebook page, and YouTube channel.

Daily and Shabbat Services

A Chapel-Style evening minyan occurs Sunday-Thursdays at 7:30pm in the Barg Sanctuary. Open to both men and women, it currently consists of 20 members who have registered in advance.

Shabbat Renewal on Fridays at 6:00pm and Shabbat Morning at 9:30am, currently consists of 20 members who have registered in advance.

Our goal is to provide in-person worship services, when deemed safe and appropriate, while protecting our congregants and staff. Individuals identified as high risk or higher risk are advised to remain home to limit their risk of exposure. We encourage these individuals to participate through our numerous virtual service options.

Registration for in-person services is available to members only, and requires logging in to reserve your space. Only those pre-registered individuals will be allowed on campus.
