Budget Review for 2022-23
The meeting is open to all members in good standing. Please register below.

Dear Congregant, 

I am very pleased to inform you that the Board of Trustees reviewed and approved a tentative budget for the next fiscal year (2022-2023). Discussion and final vote on the budget will take place at the Board meeting on Tuesday, May 17, 2022 at 7:30pm, in  Stein Hall.
 
As specified in our Constitution, the portion of this Board meeting relating to the budget is open to all members in good standing of the Congregation. You are welcome and encouraged to join us at the beginning of the Board meeting which will be dedicated to the budget discussion. This portion of the meeting usually lasts 15 to 20 minutes. After the Board considers the budget, the meeting will continue for Board members only.
 
A summary of the proposed budget is presented on the reverse side of this letter. We have been able to balance the budget with 4% global dues increase for the 2022-2023 fiscal year. Every expense line and every opportunity for revenues has been thoroughly reviewed.
 
I want to express our gratitude to the hard-working members of the Budget Committee, especially committee chair Jon Feiwell, each of whom worked many, many hours to achieve this balanced budget. I would also like to thank all the members of our Board of Trustees, Controller Nicole DeLoach, and Executive Director Andy Burger.

Preschool-aged children often fall through the gap of social services addressing food insecurity.  Kids' Meals Houston addresses the hunger and food insecurity for children ages 6 and under who are not only at a critical developmental stage but cannot access school-based free meal programs.  Each weekday, Kids Meals' Houston delivers approximately 7,000 healthy meals to Houston’s hungriest preschool-aged children under the age of 6. When school is out, every child up to age 18  in these homes also receives a healthy meal from Kids’ Meals – up to  7,500 kids per day.

Beth Yeshurun is supporting Kids' Meals Houston's mission by participating in the 2022 Summer Juice Box Challenge. You can join us in one of two ways:

Drop off your donation of 100% Juice boxes to the synagogue between Sunday, May 15th, and Friday, May 20th in the Administrative Lobby or the Bender Levy Lobby (the main entrance to the synagogue). Please make sure your donations are 100% juice.

Purchase juice boxes to be sent directly to Kids' Meals Houston. Use their Juice Box Challenge website and an additional 5% of the retail value will go back to Kids' Meals Houston!

Our goal is to provide 2,000 juice boxes! Help us get there!

Yizkor is a time when we honor the memory of our loved ones.

Help us Welcome a Rescued Holocaust Torah
Generously Sponsored by Barbara and Dell Coleman

A Holocaust Torah rescued from Moravia has found its new home in the J.B. Greenfield Chapel. This Kabbalistic Torah was originally brought to the United States by Rabbi Sholom Alchanan Singer of Congregation B’Nai Torah in Highland Park, IL.

Barbara Coleman’s parents, Cecil Levine Berman and Dr. Alex Martin Berman of blessed memory, were actively involved in maintaining this Torah as well as its silver and mantels. As the Ritual and Music Committee Chair, Dr. Berman meticulously oversaw its upkeep, including the preservation of the original German identification tag which accompanied the Torah while it was housed at the Moravian Synagogue.

The Memorial Scrolls Trust granted Beth Yeshurun special permission to house this important historical Torah in the Ark of our J.B. Greenfield Chapel. Barbara and Dell have generously sponsored its kashering and relocation. With its original mantles, the Torah is dressed with beautiful rimonim, a yad and breastplate, in tribute to the people of Hrance, Moravia.

We hope you will join us at our Annual Meeting Sunday, May 15th at 9:30 AM.  We will elect our synagogue board of directors, discuss the accomplishments of the previous year and share what is in store for the coming year.  The business meeting will be followed by breakfast.

Beth Yeshurun Family Retreat returns with a new location at Moody Gardens in Galveston! Spend Shabbat with your Beth Yeshurun clergy and Jewish country musician Joe Buchanan, then explore all the activities and attractions Moody Gardens has to offer. From Jewish learning and Shabbat services to a paddlewheel boat ride, visiting the aquarium, or relaxing by the pool, there is truly something for all ages and interests.

The retreat is open to all Beth Yeshurun and Beth Yeshurun Day School members and their families.

Yizkor is soon approaching, a time when we honor the memory of our loved ones. To ensure that the names of your loved ones are memorialized in our 5782 Yizkor Book Addendum, please complete the online Yizkor Book form. Names received after April 15 might not be printed on the Passover addendum, but will be included in the online version of the book available on our website as well as the Shavuot addendum.

Women in Diplomacy: An Inside Look at the Work of Women Serving as Diplomats in Houston
AJC Houston is partnering with the congregations and Sisterhoods of Beth Israel, Beth Yeshurun, and Emanu El to host 'Women in Diplomacy' at Congregation Emanu El (1500 Sunset Blvd.) on Wednesday, April 6. The program will start off with a reception at 9:00 a.m. in Feld Hall before moving into the Barish Sanctuary at 9:30 a.m.

This event is open to the community, feel free to share. 
Please register so we have seating and refreshments for everyone.

Join us at the Houston Raindrop Foundation Turkish House at 9301 West Bellfort, 77071.  Our discussion will be followed by an iftar - a break fast meal eaten after sundown during Ramadan.  Vegetarian and non-vegetarian options.
