Thanks to so many of you that have already participated in our partnership with Reynolds Elementary!  We'd like to share some BIG thank yous and catch you up on what we have been doing:

Thank you to our Congregants for their amazing financial support!!

  • You purchased $4,600 of school supplies from our Amazon Wish List
  • You also donated $10,600 to fund supplies and programs for the students and staff.

Thank you to our partners in the community!!

  • Antone’s/Legacy Foods provided lunch for the Back to School Teacher Luncheon
  • Congressman Al Green donated $1375 towards HEB Gift Cards for all families for Thanksgiving
  • State Senator Boris Miles is including Reynolds’ families in his annual Turkey Giveaway for Thanksgiving
  • Miles Berins collected tons of school supplies and books as his Bar Mitzvah project that he donated to Reynolds

Though we can only help virtually right now, we have been busy!

  • We provided every student with a new backpack and a total of $9,000 in school supplies
  • BY Co-sponsored HISD's “Leader in Me” leadership curriculum for the school students
  • We arranged a special Back To School luncheon for teachers before in-person school began
  • We prepared incentive goodie bags for kids that completed all of their virtual assignments before school began
  • We provided special t-shirts to recognize the members of the Reynolds Student Council
  • We are worked with the area Congressman and State Senator to provide each family with a Thanksgiving meal, including a turkey and an HEB gift card.  We are also gifted each teacher a pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving!

We are so proud of our congregation's support and of all the HARD WORK done by Diane Levy and her committee.

So what should we focus on now?

  • Tutoring!  Volunteers approved by HISD are assigned a classroom and help with virtual tutoring.  Please contact Diane Levy to find out more.
  • Cash Donations!  We provided HEB gifts cards for all of the 275 Reynolds families to enjoy special meals for Thanksgiving and Christmas.  We are also gearing up for more initiatives with the students and teachers in the spring.  We welcome your donations to continue to support all of our programs!
  • Toys!  We are hosting a toy drive during Hanukkah where we hope to give one new toy to each student.  Drop off a toy at the designate time/place or make a donation and we will shop for you!

The words of Isaiah, that we read on Yom Kippur, remind us that it is our responsibility to remove the constraints that hold back the innocent. COVID has magnified the many economic and educational inequities in our society. Our public schools – even in the best of times – often lack sufficient resources. As a congregation, what can we do to help bridge the gap, especially for the children in our community?

This year Beth Yeshurun is embarking on a long-term partnership, arranged by the Houston Area Urban League, with Reynolds Elementary School. Located in the Sunnyside neighborhood of Houston, Reynolds serves PreK through 5th graders, 96% of whom are economically disadvantaged. We will kick-off our partnership by helping to provide school supplies and look forward to growing our relationship over the coming months to include mentoring and other support services for Reynolds’ students and teachers.
How can you help?

  1.  Shop for supplies! This Amazon Wish List has all the supplies that the kids will need for the school year. Beth Yeshurun has already kicked off the supply drive by purchasing new backpacks for every student to start the year off right.
  2.  Make a Donation! First, we will fulfill the wish list of school supplies. After that, we will help purchase devices (Chromebooks and iPads) for the kids to facilitate virtual learning. Every donation helps us provide much-needed resources. You can donate online by clicking here or mail a check to Beth Yeshurun to the attention of Jennifer Rosenzweig, noting “Reynolds Elementary” on the memo line.
  3.  Give of your time! If you’d like to get involved in the partnership with Reynolds Elementary, please contact Diane Levy.

Meet the Principal of Reynolds Elementary that we will be working with, Renesiaha Carter:

We are excited to get to know the students and staff this year as we undertake this major social action program. Look for updates throughout the year as we build a relationship with Reynolds Elementary.

When we help foster a stronger, smarter, and more resilient generation by supporting elementary schools, then Isaiah’s promise (58:8) will surely come true: “Then shall your light burst through like the dawn.”
