Invitation to Judaism

At Beth Yeshurun, we have a program that enables newcomers to Judaism to learn the basics of our way of life, our way of thinking about God, and our way of looking at the world. The program is called An Invitation to Judaism and is coordinated by Rabbi Steven Morgen. This class is open to anyone but is specially designed for newcomers to Judaism. A separate syllabus outlines the class sessions and topics. The reading list includes Choosing a Jewish Life by Anita Diamant; To Life! by Harold Kushner; Essential Judaism – A Complete Guide to Beliefs, Customs, and Rituals by George Robinson; Jewish Study Bible – Tanakh Translation with commentary – Oxford; and Jewish Literacy by Joseph Telushkin. The books are required and available to purchase on Amazon.

Cantor Dorf's Introduction to Hebrew class at 10:00 is required for those taking Invitation to Judaism. Please register for that class below.

The Fundamentals of Kabbalah

Rabbi Horwitz will explain and present the basic ideas behind Kabbalah, along with how it became an important way to understand many aspects of Judaism, and other branches and central themes of Jewish mysticism.

Keeping Children Safe in a Troubled World

Parents of preteens (9-11 year olds) need to know how to talk to them about body autonomy (using correct terminology, establishing boundaries, etc) and prepare them as they enter puberty. We know that's not easy! So come learn how from Janet Pozmantier, community member, award-winning author, and consultant with ChildBuilders, whose mission is to promote mental health and prevent abuse by empowering children. Learn to read Hebrew and recognize essential prayer vocabulary. No prior knowledge is necessary. This course is open to everyone but is required for the Invitation to Judaism students.

Prayerbook Hebrew and More

Have you been looking for a class to help you to understand the Hebrew in our prayerbooks and in the Bible? Or even speak with your Israeli friends and relatives?  This is the class for you!  Naomi Enav will teach you some basic Hebrew grammar and language skills and vocabulary so you can understand not just how to say our prayers but also what they actually mean.  She will also teach some basic conversational Hebrew vocabulary. Prerequisite is the ability to read Hebrew with vowels.

For six days each week, we actively interact with the world. On the seventh, we reflect on our actions. In this unit, we will explore Shabbat and the role of time in Judaism.
