There are many reasons that someone who was not raised Jewish might consider joining the Jewish people.
For some, they never were really raised with any particular religious affiliation as children, and now that they are adults they have gone in search of a faith tradition that makes sense to them. After exploring several different religions, many come to find Judaism a satisfying, sensible, and spiritually uplifting path to God.
Others may have been raised as Christians of one denomination or another, but for some reason now find that path unsatisfactory.
In many cases, a person may have had good friends who were Jewish and discussed religion with them. Or someone may have developed a very close relationship with one particular Jewish person and that has led to an exploration of Jewish faith and practice.
But for whatever reason, in the open society of America today, there are many, many people who are searching for faith and have found the Jewish path to God and peoplehood intriguing and stimulating.
At Beth Yeshurun, we have a program that enables newcomers to Judaism to learn the basics of our way of life, our way of thinking about God, and our way of looking at the world. The program is called An Invitation to Judaism, and is coordinated by Rabbi Morgen. The program involves classes that are taught on Sunday mornings beginning in September and continuing through May. One hour is devoted to a topic of Jewish belief, history, or practice. A second hour is devoted to learning the Hebrew alphabet and word pronunciation.
