Celebrating Shabbat at Beth Yeshurun
Friday Night
Our Friday Night services welcome the Sabbath through a combination of prayers, singing and learning that last about an hour. Family services include Kinder Shabbat targeted for our youngest congregants and Shabbat Jam geared more towards elementary age children held once a month. Traditional services are also held in the J.B. Greenfield Chapel.
Saturday Morning
Shabbat morning is the main service in Judaism. Our Sabbath morning services, whether in the Sanctuary, J.B. Greenfield Chapel or the Museum Minyan, consist of basically three parts: the Shaharit Service, the Torah Service including an aliyah given by a Bat or Bar Mitzvah, and Musaf. The entire service typically lasts about two-and-a-half hours. Following the service, everyone is invited to join in the Kiddush, where refreshments are served.
The Barg Sanctuary
The Barg Sanctuary is the main sanctuary of the Synagogue and the largest sacred space in Beth Yeshurun. It is used weekly for B"nai Mitzvah celebrations, and throughout the year for large weddings and special events.
The Freedman-Levit Sanctuary
The Freedman-Levit Sanctuary was built and dedicated in 2004. It is used for smaller weddings and celebrations throughout the year as well as Shabbat services.
J.B. Greenfield Chapel
The J.B. Greenfield Chapel provides a warm and welcoming community for daily, Shabbat and festival prayers. Services in the Chapel are traditional with mixed seating. The Chapel offers a minyan led by our members every morning and evening, 365 days a year. Our gabbaim go out of their way to welcome newcomers to the service, whether they are visiting from out of town, coming to say Kaddish for a loved one, or congregation members attending for the first time. All are invited to breakfast following each weekday morning minyan. Our service is particularly “family-friendly” on Shabbat morning, when all pre-b’nai mitzvah youngsters are invited to participate in the concluding prayers, and a tasty kiddush follows for all. There is also a Torah study class led by Rabbi Diana Siegel after kiddush. Rabbi Daniel Horwitz serves as the rabbi of the J.B. Greenfield Chapel.
Museum Minyan
A welcoming community that includes all ages from newborns to ninety, the Museum Minyan"s traditional egalitarian service on Shabbat mornings begins at 9:15. Come enjoy our spirited service and join in the weekly Torah and Haftarah discussions. Lay lead, we have a talented mix of members and rabbis who daven, leyn Torah, and give divrei torah. We conclude our service with a Kiddush, where you"ll have a chance to meet and visit together with new as well as long-time Museum Minyaners. We also enjoy davening together for the High Holidays.
Friday Night Alive!
A contemporary, high energy musical service that occurs on the first Friday of most months.
Shabbat Jam
Where Shabbat Rocks! Targeted for our Young Families. Led by Rabbi Brian Strauss, Steven Sheldon on Acoustic Guitar, Andy Guttman on Electric Guitar, David Bloome on Drums, David Goldstein on Bass Guitar, Kristine Mills & Dee Dee Dochen on Vocals. Join us for a special Shabbat dinner* following services. (*reservations and payment is required for dinner)
Kinder Shabbat
Our newest service, Kinder Shabbat is a wonderful way to end the week and welcome Shabbat. Lively and informal, Kinder SHabbat is “kid friendly” all the way, and creates a great Shabbos feeling for our littlest ones (ages 0 - 4). Led by Rabbi Brian Strauss and Cantor Francyne Davis Jacobs, it’s a great way to make Shabbat happen. Kinder Shabbat is held once a month. Shabbat service is from 6:00 - 6:30 followed by light kid-friendly food.
Junior Congregation
Junior Congregation is a Saturday morning Shabbat service for families with school-age children in 3rd - 5th grades. It provides a nurturing environment for the children to gain skills necessary to participate in and lead services in preperation for their Bar/Bat Mitzvah. Join Rabbi Steven Morgen and Cantor Diane Dorf most Saturday mornings, 9:00 - 10:00!
Tot Shabbat
Tot Shabbat is our monthly Shabbat program for our youngest members (4 and under, and their siblings). Singing, dancing and hugging with Marilyn Albert! A wonderful way to introduce Shabbat to our BY tots! Monthly, 9:30-10:30 a.m.
Shabbat Shalom ServiceShabbat Shalom is a Shabbat morning program for young children ages 3-7; younger children are welcomed with a parent. Each Shabbat the children pray, sing, dance, hear stories, and much more! The program begins at 10:15am (after the Torah is marched thru the synagogue) allowing parents to be in the service for Torah service and sermon. The children then re-join the congregational services for the conclusion. |
