The William S. Malev Schools for Religious Studies

The William S. Malev Schools for Religious Studies of Congregation Beth Yeshurun encompasses religious education for students from Kindergarten – 12th Grade.
Religious School (Kindergarten – 7th Grade)
The Religious School of Congregation Beth Yeshurun serves the Jewish educational needs of the children of Congregation Beth Yeshurun in Kindergarten through seventh grade. The aim of our Religious School is to provide the child with a firm Jewish foundation encompassing moral and ethical values coupled with spiritual growth which can be built upon throughout the elementary and high school years and later into college and adulthood.
Curriculum:
We are excited to announce that beginning in Fall, 2011, we will be a participating institution in The Goldring/Woldenberg Institute of Southern Jewish Life (ISJL). As a participant, we will be using the ISJL spiraled curriculum which incorporates ten key content areas: Community, Jewish Holidays, Mitzvot and Jewish Values, Tanach (Torah, Prophets, and Writings), God, Hebrew and Prayer, Israel, Culture and Symbols, Jewish Lifecycle Events, and Jewish History.
Hillel High School (8th – 12 Grades)
Hillel High School strives to meet the needs of Congregation Beth Yeshurun teenagers by providing a relevant and increasingly sophisticated continuation of their Jewish education post Bar/Bat Mitzvah. Through educational, spiritual and community programs, Hillel High School helps students increase their Judaic knowledge and strengthen their connection both to Beth Yeshurun and Am Yisrael. Our school is a place in which teens can continue to foster a positive Jewish identity, and develop a personal relationship with God and a lifelong commitment to Jewish learning, Israel and the Jewish people.
Curriculum:
Hillel High School offers teens the opportunity to learn in an increasingly sophisticated and critical manner and to experience the joy and beauty of Judaism. Each year is designed to offer our students distinct and personally relevant insights into their heritage and responsibilities as Jews. This year our curriculum includes:
- 8th Grade: Jewish Lifecycle, What’s in the Bible/How to find things in the Bible
- 9th Grade: Jewish Virtues and Jewish Medical Ethics
- 10th Grade: What the Rabbis Taught, Prayer, and Theology
- 11th Grade: Different Religions, Israel Advocacy, and God on Trial
- 12th Grade: Sessions with guest speakers at Rabbi Rosen’s home and other venues tailored to teens on the brink of adulthood
